Western. Anime gets ultra samey and boring a lot. And when it comes to the animation, it's often subpar. There's a lot of fluidity and variety in western styles with an emphasis on detailed realistic expression that actually shows the artists studied PEOPLE when drawing their characters. Anime cuts too many corners.

Huh. To me when I think western I actually think more detailed, because what comes to mind is less western cartoons and more the ungodly ugly art of bad comic books, lol.

I'm voting eastern though

asking deviantart if they like anime or cartoons isn't one that'll get you a particularly bias-free result

Hmmmm....from a cost perspective I'd go with western, from a detail perspective I'd go eastern. If this is asking about your style, you do you. But I think making detailed bodies and simpler eyes might be a good compromise. I'll admit I watch more eastern than western, but some of my favorite shows growing up were western. And a more western feel allows you to tackle different kinds of stories with more ease. I see more stories with animal casts in western media more (Zootopia was a lot of fun), and this possibly has to do with more exaggerated details.

Basically what I'm saying is that I watch more eastern because it has more detail, but western when done well can be just as good.

I like and prefer the anime style and I don't mind the western style to a certain degree. When I discovered anime back then the art or style was just so different and unique and I was just amazed by it and the art is one of the reasons I got into anime. Forward to now and I still like anime way more yet and mainly just watch that. I don't watch western cartoons very often these days except for Last Airbender, Korra and Teen Titans mainly cause any other western style art is just a little too wacky these days or is a little too simple and bland. I like it when things can stand out more or just really pop out and to me anime does that more than western can. I mean there's other reasons why I like anime more as well, but that's a different topic and for another time.

I mean i'll always remember the 90's and the western shows I used to watch and enjoyed back then, but anime/eastern just connects with me more or my tastes and interests I suppose, Anime is just more detailed, presentable, appealing, unique, and well endowed. It's just more consistent and a little more realistic even though they also can exaggerate certain aspects at times or certain parts of anatomy, but there still closer than western can be.

Both styles are unique in there own way and I can appreciate western to a degree, but I can safely say that I would choose anime/eastern style and prefer it as I find that style to be way more enjoyable at least to me anyway.

I love the eastern style a lot more; that said, I'm definitely not one for complex and defined details. I like anime art style with simple shading and not too much detail.
I guess that's weird.

I'd generally stick with the anime style, as there's where I get a lot of my inspiration, design-wise. But I've always told myself I want to do a more mixed style, that can vary from cartoony to more serious.

I guess one way to put it is a "western anime" style.

It all depends on context. In terms of professional-level drawing and animation, the western style(s) are far more variable, usually being either absolute genius or total shit (highly subjective, of course), while the eastern style is more consistent but doesn't as often reach such unique highs. The eastern style generally wins out in terms of immediate appeal for me, though.

In terms of weird fetish stuff, I'd say I prefer eastern and hybrid styles over western - just doesn't feel as weird.

In context of kinky art, anime, simply because western style doesn't work very well. If we're going 100% that is.

Western style has been degrading in current years so I have to go with Anime.  Back when stuff like Batman the Animated series or even the first Teen Titans was a hit it was great but lately it's simply Western has been degrading in looks... Part of the saving grace of certain series like The Amazing World of Gumball, Adventure Time, and Steven Universe is not just art style but the content of the series too.

Mostly anime, due to the fact that most Western cartoon have absolutely SHITTY art styles.

However, there ARE good cartoon art styles like The Amazing World of Gumball and Steven Universe, but I still prefer anime.

Both have their perks, but I love the style of eastern art a tad more than western.
Western cartoons like The Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy and South Park seem to focus more on story content and less on animation in my opinion. However this allows a detachment from the realistic in exchange for more outlandish situations with seemingly lessened responsibility and accountability.

Anime has been a huge resource of entertainment and I loved a lot of the artwork. The artwork seemed more grounded in the realistic and pulled my attention easier. When I watch anime, it is easier for me to feel a part of that world rather than outside it. The attention to detail is predominant, and an emphasis toward responsibility and consequence of actions and events is present.

In all honesty, I think your artwork seems to lean more to the eastern side of the spectrum, though that is not to ignore a couple of cartoon elements as well. I really like your artwork because of the details you put into your work; especially in the shading process. It must be a challenge to shade the works you made to give your art its 3-d feel. However; I do not think this poll should influence you to choose one extreme over another; otherwise it would have a more general feel rather than a unique one.

In summary, if all things are good in moderation, I would like to see your artwork to continue to play with both elements from time to time. If you have read this comment, thank you for your time and I hope this will provide some useful feedback concerning the poll.

I meant, the context for the type of animation. Western is great for comedy, anime is better for drama/storytelling.

Largely depends on the quality. Currently, western cartoons look hideous and largely copy each other, so I'm running to anime.

Well I do like both styles and western art styles are usually easier to animate, but there's something about the anime art style that's sentimental to me. As much as I hate it when nostalgia dictates people's life it really takes me back.

I know the feeling. Part of why my style's the way it is now is because I grew up with anime.

But sometimes I do wish I'd developed a more cartoonish style just because I like the simplicity of western styles too.

I'm fine with Cartoony Western Art, but, when it comes to Kink Art...I really don't think that style works. Simply because...well...it doesn't mesh well. At least for me, anyways.

I have major difficulty deciding. >< I like the proper anatomy of anime, but the simplicity of western cartoons. I guess you could say I prefer elements of both in a single drawing.

I am 110% a cartoony artist. Everything I draw is exaggerated and simple in shape. I find it a little cuter usually. Still, I very much appreciate realistic art - I just prefer drawing in a more cartoonish style because it lets me set my own perameters for characters based on how I want them to look, rather than strictly holding to anatomy like the Bible. Anatomy IS still important, though, but cartoony art lets me make characters that more appeal to my artistic tastes.

That answer is taking the easy way out of this poll.

Then again, that's probably what most people think anyway if they aren't 100% on either side.
